Firewalls

The term Firewall refers to a router which servers as gateway form your local network to the public Internet and from the public Internet to your local network.  By analyzing the data traffic flowing through it the firewall can block unwanted traffic such as hackers, viruses and other unauthorized users from accessing your network while allowing necessary traffic such as email, web pages and files to pass.

Many firewall can also establish secure connections referred to as Virtual Private Network (VPN Tunnels from your local network to a remote user or remote network.  The data flow across the connections is secure because it is encrypted and therefore not accessible by anyone on the public Internet.
